The Interview That Crossed The Line — And What I Still Believe About Vulnerability

At the 2014 Grammys, I performed "Same Love" alongside Madonna, Macklemore, Ryan Lewis, and Queen Latifah while 33 couples were married on live television. And then I floated to the planet Orkjar on a golden pop-tart, because in what universe does a chubby lesbian get to be a red sparkling princess lady that sings about gay love? I cried for hours in the rehearsal, overwhelmed by the implications of what we were about to do. The day after that surreal performance, I felt electric. I was in the middle of recording my first full-length album, and was scheduled to appear on a live celebrity talk show to promote my single. It was one of those shows where they recap vapid useless celebrity gossip, so naturally I couldn't ...

The Dating Rollercoaster

Dating, as a gay man, can seem impossible. We have all heard the constant barrage of “dating apps have ruined dating” “every just wants hook ups” “no one wants anything serious.” Well, let’s toss all that aside for a minute because guess who is throwing out those broad generalizations? Yeah, guys in the dating pool that have probably done things to manifest those statements. We can change things. It can get better! Yes, apps have changed how things are done, but we should be real – if you are on Grindr you MAY find a date, but most likely it will be just a hook up. It’s in the name of the damn app! Try venturing into apps/platforms like Tindr...

Final Thoughts On My National Run

If I had to sum up my national run competing for Mr. Gay USofA, it would be “Heavy is the bag of drag unseen.” I returned last month from competing for USofA where unfortunately I missed the cut by a hair. That, and of course my choice clubwear, as it often does. I’ll get to the point, if I may. I arrived Tuesday afternoon to check-in at my hotel and catch the finals of Mr. Gay USofA at Large. Congrats winner Ade Toujore and his court of kings. It was a late night when I departed Rich’s Nightclub back to the fabulous Four Points Sheraton where I bunked for the night. I unfortunately got a parking ticket for siting too close to the stop sign. ...

Reasons to celebrate trans resilience during the era of Trump

Photo credit: Alex SchmiderSegements of this article were originally published in The Student Life of the Claremont Colleges by GLAAD Campus Ambassador, Donnie TC Denome. This past Monday, November 20th was Transgender Day of Remembrance. Just like every November 20th this day was one for solemn reflection and mourning. There have been, on record, at least 23 trans people killed in the United States since the beginning of 2017. 23 moments of silence, 23 reasons to cry.But in the midst of the disaster that is the Trump administration and all the havoc it has wreaked on the trans community, we have to stay strong and look forward. Why can’t we ever stop talking about Russia?

I’m not saying there’s a direct connection. But it is weird. If you followed politics anytime between 2013–2015, you are certainly aware of the preponderance of stories surrounding LGBTQ rights and the Russian government’s hostility toward them. From the 2013 “gay propaganda law” to the controversies surrounding the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, to the many stories about American anti-LGBTQ activists’ acting in concert with Russian activists in order to strategize around shared concerns, there was a three year period of time where just about any domestic story that popped up about the Eurasian nation or its President, Vladimir Putin, somehow involved LGBTQ rights, either in part or in full. Firsthand stories about the frightening state of being LGBTQ in Putin’s Russia were everywhere at the time...
