micdotcom: Texas eyes North Carolina-inspired bathroom bill, seems cool with losing millionsThe backlash against transgender rights has moved to Texas, where Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is picking up where North Carolina left off.Patrick has listed passing the “Women’s Privacy Act,” which requires people to use restrooms that correspond to the gender they were assigned at birth, as a priority for the upcoming legislative session. The bill has split the business and religious wings of the state party because of its estimated costs to state commerce.According to the 4,300-member Texas Association of Business, it could cost the state at least $964 million.“The message from the Texas business community is loud and clear,” Chris Wallace, president of the Texas Association of Business, said ...

the-movemnt: How to support the Black Lives Matter movement as a white allyWhite allyship, though it may sound difficult, is a key part of the fight against white supremacy. To learn more about how white people can contribute to the Black Lives Matter movement, Mic spoke to Heather Cronk, the interim co-director of Showing Up for Racial Justice, a national network of groups and individuals that organizes white people in the fight for racial justice. There is a clear place for white people in this movement. Many white people Cronk encounters feel like the movement for black lives is “not for them” and that they “don’t see themselves in it,” she said. But, that’s simply not true.“There’s a clear role for white folks ...

Hello, most lovely of humans.Just three short weeks ago, we shared a Tuesday together that knocked many of us to our knees. My work here at Everyone Is Gay has always been incredibly important to me, personally, and to the thousands who use our resources. In the late-night hours of November 8th, though, as the election results were solidified, I knew that this work would be taking on a deeper resolve, and fighting a harder fight, than ever before.Today marks a different Tuesday - a Tuesday where we aim to stand back up together and look forward to the work ahead. #GivingTuesday is an international day of giving that was started in 2012, as a way for communities to come together and support the causes that ...

plannedparenthood: Planned Parenthood has been here for 100 years, and one thing is clear: We will never back down and we will never stop fighting to ensure that Planned Parenthood patients have access to the care they need and for the people who come from communities that need our continued support in this new reality. Many of the people Planned Parenthood health centers serve may be concerned about their safety, and the safety of their families and friends. We will support our immigrant, Muslim, Black and Latinx colleagues, partners and patients in the face of threats made over the last several months. Health care should not be political. Every morning, Planned Parenthood health center staff across the country wake up and open their doors, as they have this ...

the-movemnt: People are using MLK Jr. to silence black protesters — but they’re forgetting something important On Tuesday night, protests erupted in Charlotte, North Carolina, following the police shooting of Keith Lamont Scott, a black man who authorities said had a firearm. Hundreds of protesters congregated in the streets calling for justice for Scott, who his sister maintained was unarmed. Many Twitter users brought up King in order to decry current protests. But critics of the modern-day movement for black lives seem to suffer from historical amnesia when it comes to King’s legacy and the measures others fighting for justice had to take to produce radical change. There’s a history, of course, of people misrepresenting King and what he stood for. In 2016, King remains best...

micdotcom: Early on Thursday, The Daily Beast published an article by London editor Nico Hines in which he “reported” on his use of Grindr at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Hines is a straight man, and the article is an unethical mess. Hines, who is married with children, included the heights, weights and countries of origin of several athletes whom he arranged dates with. That he saw this as no big deal is a huge problem and shows that he is blind to his own privilege by writing the piece. Since it was first published, the article has been altered but not removed. Absolutely despicable. No, no, no.
