American Indian tribes still oppose gay marriage

When it comes to those who are fighting the fight against gay marriage, you might generally think of right-wing Christian conservatives, right?  It seems like some American Indian tribes are digging in to prevent marriage equality from hitting their sovereign land, and they will likely be successful. The Associated Press Reports: Since 2011, as the number of states recognizing such unions spiked to 37, at least six smaller tribes have revisited and let stand laws that define marriage as being between a man and a woman, according to an Associated Press review of tribal records. In all, tribes with a total membership approaching 1 million won’t recognize marriages between two men or two women. Several explicitly declare that same-sex marriages are prohibited. And some have even toughened...

Ben Carson takes on the selfie

Retired neurosurgeon and likely Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson is taking on the selfie and the selfie stick. In an op-ed piece for the Washington Post’s “10 Things to Toss This Spring” series, Carson said he thinks people should stop taking selfies and should can those pesky selfie sticks too. “Beyond the obvious narcissism of endlessly photographing oneself and blasting it over social networks for others to admire, selfies are dangerous — to animals, sports spectators, artwork and the rest of us,” Carson wrote. “Focus your camera on your surroundings, not on yourself!” Carson added. Carson is expected to make an announcement in May that he will seek the Republican nomination in the 2016 Presidential election. While other Presidential hopefuls are targeting...

Marco Rubio, the freshman senator from Florida, is the latest Republican to jump into the 2016 race for President.  The anti-gay ultra-conservative threw his hat in the ring Monday night in Florida. “Grounded by the lessons of our history, but inspired by the promise of our future, I announce my candidacy for President of the United States of America,” Rubio said before a group gathered at Miami’s Freedom Tower. As if he had no Republican contenders, Rubio (who at 43-years-old is the youngest candidate to enter the race) decided to take aim at Hillary Clinton trying to cast himself as the forward-thinking candidate. “Just yesterday, a leader from yesterday,” told his crowd of supporters, “began a campaign for...

Theatre Review: “Hand to God”

To my mind, this raucous comedy is the best new American play in many a moon (the only one this decade I liked more is Douglas Carter Beane’s The Nance). Playwright Robert Askins shows us what happens when a teenage boy’s puppet at a Texas Christian Puppet Ministry starts revealing his darkest urges. What comes across most profoundly is the price one pays for repressing one’s feelings – especially the way they inevitably return in other, even darker, forms. In Hand to God that form is the foul-mouthed puppet Tyrone. While he may be nothing more or less than the way the unconscious mind of teen Jason (Steven Boyer) expresses its hungers for sex and revenge, it’s clear that Jason experiences Tyrone...

Guam gay marriage debate

The U.S. territory of Guam finds itself in limbo when it comes to whether or not gay marriages will be performed or not.  The attorney general directed officials on Wednesday to begin immediately processing marriage application submitted by same-sex couples, but the director of the Department of Public Health and Social Services says it won’t happen “until further notice.” On Monday a lesbian couple was denied a marriage application, so they sued over the territory’s marriage law.  The U.S. District Court of Guam falls under the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which has ruled in favor of gay marriage.   Attorney General Elizabeth Barrett-Anderson issued a directive based on the 9th Circuit’s decision in October that lifted state...

Theatre Review: “Wolf Hall”

The reign of English king Henry VIII (1509-1547) – full of palace intrigue and illicit lust – is the stuff of soap opera. It has already produced several popular television series, including the early 1970s miniseries The Six Wives of Henry VIII and the even more popular late 2000s Showtime drama The Tudors. Most recently, Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall novels about Henry’s political representative Thomas Cromwell have become very popular indeed, inspiring both a miniseries and this stage adaptation. At its best, this version carries you along like the trashiest soap. Thank goodness that Wolf Hall sustains that suspenseful, brisk pace for much of its long running time. Those moments when the pace slackens are truly dangerous, as one may be lulled into an...

Hillary Clinton writes Elizabeth Warren’s Time 100 entry

Hillary Clinton got the chance to tell the world what she thinks about Elizabeth Warren in a piece about the Senator for Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People list. In the piece, Clinton calls Warren a champion for the middle class. “Elizabeth Warren’s journey from janitor’s daughter to Harvard professor to public watchdog to U.S. Senator has been driven by an unflagging determination to level the playing field for hardworking American families like the one she grew up with in Oklahoma,” Clinton writes. “She fights so hard for others to share in the American Dream because she lived it herself.” Hoping to suck up some of Clinton’s campaign funds during the primary, Republicans and other pundits are pushing Elizabeth...

Lincoln Chafee plans to run for president

Former Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee says he plans to challenge Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination. Chafee, a former Republican, has been very critical of Clinton.  He acknowledged that Thursday on CNN saying: “Yes, that’s why I’m running. Because I feel strong about where we’re going as a country.” Last week, Chafee said he has formed an exploratory committee to run for President.  His aide spokeswoman Debbie Rich confirmed that in a phone interview with CNN. “We are still in the exploratory committee phase,” Rich said. “We will file the proper papers to be an official candidate, but that has not happened yet.” In addition to serving as governor, Chafee also served in the Senate. The Log Cabin Republicans (they’re are the gay members of the GOP) are up in arms after getting uninvited from the Western Conservative Summit. The Denver Post Reports: Members of the  Colorado Log Cabin Republicans and gay-rights activists in both major parties say the move sends a wrong message. Theatre Review: “Gigi”

Bottom line: Vanessa Hudgens doesn’t embarrass herself. She’s perfectly fine as a beautiful girl coming of age in the glamorous and morally ambiguous wold of belle epoque Paris (though honestly at Broadway prices, “perfectly fine” isn’t quite enough). The best thing about this production, however, is Victoria Clark as her youngish grandmother Mamita. When acting the role of Mamita, Clark gives the evening’s most shaded performance – we see her stern concern for Gigi, but always colored with a warm feeling of deep love. But it is when Clarke sings that Gigi really takes flight, her solo “Say A Prayer” being the one moment in the show with undeniable emotional pull and musical theater magic. The show does have other virtues: Dee Hoty...

Hillary Clinton wants Supreme Court to rule in favor of gay marriage

Until now Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has said she supports the expansion of gay marriage rights on a state-by-state basis, however this week she took her stance a step further.  With a Supreme Court case coming up that could decide gay marriage on the national level, Hillary says she wants the highest court in the land to rule in favor of marriage equality. “Hillary Clinton supports marriage equality and hopes the Supreme Court will come down on the side of same-sex couples being guaranteed that constitutional right,” Clinton spokesperson Adrienne Elrod told BuzzFeed News. This is a far cry from her Republican contenders, most of which are against gay marriage all together. The post Hillary Clinton wants Supreme Court to rule in...
