It’s been a rough week—hell, it’s been a rough year—for entertainment royalty. Just one day after the death of her daughter, actress and writer Carrie Fisher, Hollywood icon Debbie Reynolds passed away at the age of 84. Cabaret Review: Norm Lewis

This Christmas cabaret is one of the more conventional ones I’ve seen this year – and that’s entirely a good thing. In the spirit of his own favorite singer, Johnny Mathis, Norm Lewis’s show leans into holiday fun and warmth. It’s not an entirely shallow show – there are dark shadows here and there – but the emphasis is on Christmas’s pleasures and joys. And it’s not strictly a Christmas show. He opens with a frisky “My Favorite Things” – so frisky in fact that he slightly lost track of the lyrics “First night people, first night!” he said with a big ingratiating grin. Lewis assays “Fever”, which Peggy Lee made famous, but he gives it back some of the...

Opera Review: “Salome”

Patricia Racette’s assured performance in the title role is the main reason to catch the Met’s current revival of Richard Strauss’s 1905 opera Salome. It is a musically complex and demanding role, so it’s no small feat that Racette makes it look and sound easy. The role also covers a lot of vocal range, and Racette rumbled at the bottom and roared at the top, with no sign of strain at either end. Based on Oscar Wilde’s 1891 play of the same name, Salome tells of the titular stepdaughter of the tetrarch Herod Antipas, who requests the head of John the Baptist (here called “Jochanaan”) on a silver platter as a reward for granting Herod’s request that she perform “the dance of the...

Did Police Treat Grindr Serial Killer’s Victims Differently Because They Were Gay Men?

There’s a horrifying story coming out of England, where gay serial killer Stephen Port was recently sentenced: the victim’s families claim there was significant police bias. The backstory: Port lured four men to their deaths using online apps, poisoning them with GHB, and hiding their corpses. Related: Grindr Serial Killer Stephen Port Found Guilty In Murders Of Four Gay Men Members of the victims’ families claim police simply assumed all the men killed themselves with careless drug use, chalking it up to homosexuals doing too many party drugs. Allegedly, family members tried telling police that the young victims weren’t the type to use drugs. Those explanations fell on deaf ears. Related: Doctor Explains Why You’re Addicted To Grindr Police initially claimed the deaths were...

Theatre Review: “tick, tick…BOOM!”

This pop-rock musical gets most of its pungency from the score’s lively, inventive songs. tick, tick…BOOM! is also haunted by the fact that it’s an autobiographical musical from the late composer of Rent, Jonathan Larson. This gives the existential angst lead character Jonathan feels a particular edge. tick, tick…BOOM! tells the story of an ambitious composer anxiously pondering where his career and life are headed as he approaches his 30th birthday. His girlfriend wants to get married and move out of the city, his best friend has found happiness switching from being an unsuccessful actor to a successful marketing exec, but Jonathan is still waiting on tables and trying to write the great American musical. The score has tons of innate urgency...

Another One Of Trump’s Cabinet Candidates Has Made Horrific Comments About LGBTQs

Just how bad is David Clarke, currently being considered for Donald Trump’s cabinet? Oh, boy, he’s really, really bad. Like, even bad by the standards of The Donald administration, and that’s saying something considering the monsters he’s handing power over to. Here are a few of Clarke’s greatest hits: After a gunman attacked the Pulse nightclub in the worst American mass shooting, Clarke said that gun control was a “distraction” from more important issues like Hillary Clinton‘s emails. Yup, the mass murder of dozens of queer people: a “distraction.” He also called trans people “freakish,” so thanks for that, and said “they’re shoving it down our throats.” He probably means that metaphorically, which...

Theatre Review: “Les Liaisons Dangereuses”

It’s a little different seeing Les Liaisons Dangereuses in these days of heightened awareness of the prevalence of sexual assaults on women. Our new pussy-grabber-in-cheif makes the exploits of the rapacious Vicomte de Valmont stand out even more starkly. Valmont may claim that his assaults are intentionally resistible so that woman can’t claim he forced them. Still, he does indeed grab women – who are saying no – right in the pussy. If in the past the Marquise de Merteuil’s final “war” on Valmont seemed a pass too far, it seems all too justifiable now. As Valmont, Liev Schreiber cleverly calibrates all of this, shading his interpretation with the sense that he is more a slave of his appetites than their...

Check out the list, hot off the presses after the jump! 1 KRISHA (Trey Edward Shults) This hilariously harrowing portrait of a family reunion ruined by an alcoholic relative and too many dogs is told with verve and lunacy and features a top-notch performance by Krisha Fairchild, the director’s own aunt. Opera Review: “Jenůfa”

For me, the luminous sound of the score is the main appeal of Jenůfa, the watershed 1904 Czech opera by Leoš Janáček. In the current revival at the Met, Conductor David Robertson delivers a gorgeously polished account of the piece, making singers and orchestra feel almost like a single virtuoso instrument. Finnish soprano Karita Mattila is the established star here, playing the title character’s stepmother, the Kostelnička, the moral guardian of the small village in which they live. She delivers on her reputation, singing with great clarity and passion, but it’s a credit to the quality of this production that she doesn’t particularly stand out. Oksana Dyka is equally marvelous as Jenůfa, a victim of the village’s hypocrisy – a role which helped Mattila...

“Very Sick” Shelley Duvall Featured In Heartbreaking, Utterly Exploitive Interview

A deeply upsetting “teaser” (tee hee?) for an interview with Dr. Phil and actress Shelley Duvall has been making the rounds this week, and many are calling for a boycott of the show, seeing the event as wholly exploitive and demeaning. The teaser features Duvall explaining to Dr. Phil that she’s “very sick” and “needs help.” “That’s what I’m here for,” crows Dr. Phil, casually demonstrating empathy is a dream. Of course, not everyone believes mental illness can be cured by an opportunistic gasbag trotting out human vulnerability before an audience of millions like a cash-hungry carnival barker from hell. As Page Six reports, Stanley Kubrick’s daughter Vivian Kubrick penned a letter to Dr. Phil...

Cabaret Review: Judy Collins

No one sings a folk song more beautifully than Judy Collins, and few people sing more beautifully, period. She’s an authentic river of song, in truly golden voice in her seventies. She’ll be talking about a song in passing, and then launch into three or four lines, singing with breathtakingly casual grace and beauty. And then continue with her story “and so I told Leonard Cohen that yes, ‘Suzanne’ is a good song and I’ll be recording it tomorrow…” In tribute to Cohen’s passing she did a medley of his “Bird on a Wire” with one of he own songs – Cohen had encouraged her as a songwriter, which was life-changing for her. When she sings a song in earnest, she’s truly...
