LIBEL LAWS. Trump again threatens the New York Times: “When he ran for president, he suggested that he would “open up” U.S. libel law to make it easier for people to sue news organizations, though experts noted that it would be difficult for him to actually follow through on that threat. Notably, it would require getting around a major Supreme Court precedent on press freedom: The 1964 case New York Times v. Sullivan outlined newspapers’ First Amendment protections and established the high bar that plaintiffs must clear to win libel cases against them.” The failing @nytimes has disgraced the media world. Gotten me wrong for two solid years. Change libel laws? https://t.co/QIqLgvYLLi — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 30, 2017 ISIS. Photos purport to ...

CBS News reports: The Freedom Caucus wants to lower premiums by rolling back what are known as the Obamacare “essential benefits” — like maternity care, emergency room...

Australia Celebrates Coming Out, with Condiments : WATCH

The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Association publicized a clever metaphor for coming out in a new video entitled “The Big Deal–#EqualLove” to coincide with the city’s iconic LGBT-friendly celebration. Written and directed by Armand de Saint-Salvy, the clip features a backyard birthday celebration for a father attended by his large family. With everyone greedily drenching their food with barbecue sauce, Dad notices his son, accompanied by an apparent boyfriend, is not doing likewise. Always have been.” His father is momentarily stunned, and leaves to collect himself. He returns shortly, to everyone’s relief, and embraces...

Trump Administration Sought Help from FBI to Squash Reports about its Communications with Russia

The Trump administration contacted the FBI asking it to publicly dispute reports about communications between Trump’s associates and Russia during the 2016 campaign, CNN reports: White House officials had sought the help of the bureau and other agencies investigating the Russia matter to say that the reports were wrong and that there had been no contacts, the officials said. The reports of the contacts were first published by The New York Times and CNN on February 14. The direct communications between the White House and the FBI were unusual because of decade-old restrictions on such contacts. Such a request from the White House is a violation of procedures that limit communications with the FBI on pending investigations. CNN has more… The CNN reports as additional news emerged...

9th Circuit Upholds Suspension of Trump’s Muslim Travel Ban

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals has unanimously upheld the suspension of Donald Trump’s Muslim travel ban… Here’s the ruling. The Washington Post reports: The Justice Department, representing the Trump administration, could now ask the Supreme Court — which often defers to the president on matters of immigration and national security — to intervene. The Supreme Court, though, remains one justice short, and many see it as ideologically split 4-4. A tie would keep in place whatever the appeals court decides. A Justice Department lawyer, representing the Trump administration, and Washington state’s solicitor general, representing the opposition, made their final pitches to the appeals court Tuesday at a contentious hearing. Both sides faced skeptical questioning, and the panel seemed particularly interested in what evidence Trump relied...

Idaho Man Reverses, Pleads Guilty to Federal Hate Crime in Murder of Gay Man

An Idaho man pleaded guilty to a federal hate crime on Tuesday in the murder of a gay man last year, in a reversal of an earlier not guilty plea issued late last month. Kelly Schneider, 23, of Nampa, had already previously pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the killing of Steven Nelson, who was 49 and also of Nampa. He had viciously kicked the victim to death with steel-toed boots on April 29 of last year, following the use of an online personals ad posing as a male escort to lure the victim to a remote recreational area, Gott’s Point. He reportedly used homophobic slurs as he did so. The guilty plea was announced by Acting Assistant Attorney General Tom Wheeler and District of Idaho U...

South Dakota to Consider Anti-Trans Locker Room Bill

The latest state-level attempt to micromanage gender identity among trans youths comes in South Dakota, where two Republican lawmakers have introduced a bill that specifically designates locker room use by students in accordance with their sex at birth. A similar bill was actually vetoed by Republican Governor Dennis Daugaard last year, who appropriately said of that bill that it “does not address any pressing issue concerning the school districts of South Dakota” and would instead needlessly “impose statewide standards” and “remove the ability of local school districts” to determine what is best for their students. Of the new attempt by Republican State Senator Lance Russell, resident advocates responded warily on behalf of the students who would be singled out: Libby Skarin, policy director...

The Devil Wears Prada is coming to Broadway, and Elton John and Paul Rudnick are writing the musical adaptation, Deadline reports: “To bring The Devil Wears Prada to the stage, we knew we needed to find artists as inimitable as the characters in the story,” Bob Cohen of Fox Stage Productions and McCollum said a joint statement. “We needed artists whose work has run the gamut from music and publishing to drama and fashion. We could think of only two names: Elton John and Paul Rudnick. That’s all!” Composer-lyricist Rudnick’s myriad credits include Broadway’s I Hate Hamlet and such other stage fare as Jeffrey and The New Century, along with the the screenplays for In & Out and Addams Family Values.
