Cabaret Review: Ginger Minj

The Minj has genuine article musical theatre training and chops. Departing from previous showtune-heavy shows, however, she has made the move of structuring her new cabaret act Sweet T around a more rock oriented songlist, including a handful of autobiographical songs for which she wrote the lyrics. Sweet T only features a handful of songs, with much more monologue and audience interaction. Ginger is a very engaging stage persona, so overall this is a good thing. Also, half the songs are ballads, which would be a problem if they followed close on each other, but matters less with story in between. The act is in the very traditional mold of “this is my life” autobiographical cabarets, telling much the same story as her previous shows, but...

Cabaret Review: Jinxk Monsoon & Major Scales

‘Tis the season – time for drag queens to work a holiday theme to buy Mama a new pair of shoes! There’s a joke in Jinkx Monsoon’s current Xmas show that makes that explicit – “Why do we put ourselves through doing holiday shows? For the paycheck!!!” This particular show also features her musical counterpart, pianist/composer/raconteur Major Scales, and is called Christmas Mourning, mostly in response to the election. Their biggest hit, The Vaudevillians, was a real stunner, a thoroughly thought-out evening of cabaret theatre, which successfully staked their claim to be regarded as major players in the worlds of both high drag and cabaret. This show is almost as structured – which is very unusual for holiday drag shows...

Opera Review: “Salome”

Patricia Racette’s assured performance in the title role is the main reason to catch the Met’s current revival of Richard Strauss’s 1905 opera Salome. It is a musically complex and demanding role, so it’s no small feat that Racette makes it look and sound easy. The role also covers a lot of vocal range, and Racette rumbled at the bottom and roared at the top, with no sign of strain at either end. Based on Oscar Wilde’s 1891 play of the same name, Salome tells of the titular stepdaughter of the tetrarch Herod Antipas, who requests the head of John the Baptist (here called “Jochanaan”) on a silver platter as a reward for granting Herod’s request that she perform “the dance of the...

The Vespa Guide To Getting Laid In London Since the turn of the 21st century, LGBTQ rights in London have gotten stronger than ever, and they’ve got lots of anti-discrimination laws. Great Britain legalized same-sex marriage in 2014 — beating America by a year — and making London a must-visit European city for gay travelers. Openly Gay PA State Rep Brian Sims Gives Impassioned Support For Medical Marijuana

Though out PA Rep. Brian Sims is no longer running for Congress, his place in our hearts is secured with some fierce advocacy for medical marijuana. Speaking on the floor in support of the legalization of medical marijuana for prescription in PA, he laid the smackdown on his opposition and made us a bit sad that we won’t see him seeking a more national stage anytime soon. Seriously. He takes down the haters: “I’m disturbed by a lot of what I’m hearing from the opposition. Made up statistics about the deaths that medical marijuana has not caused and co-opting tragedies and accidents that had nothing to do with medicinal marijuana to somehow justify not giving the medicine to kids.” And puts...

From D.C. Council Member To Male Strip Club Promoter, Jim Graham Is Proof You Can Have It All

After serving four terms as a Washington, D.C. council member, Jim Graham decided it was time for a change. He was tired of working in government and craved something a little more stimulating. So he took a part-time job producing events at an all-nude strip club. “I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do after leaving the Council,” Graham, who lost his council primary last year, tells Metro Weekly. “I knew I didn’t want to work full time. I’ve had two jobs in 31 years. Fifteen years at Whitman-Walker, 16 years on the Council, and I really wanted to do something different. And I did want to make some money, and I also wanted to have some fun.” Related: Watch Male ...

Are Bottoms More Promiscuous Than Tops?

“I’ve always believed that bottoms have more fun,” blogger Jerry Plaza writes in a new op-ed published by GayGuys.com. “We’re able to tease, please and squeeze our way into sexual situations necessary for us to be a part of. After all, if there isn’t a man willing to bend over backwards, penetration is out of the question.” Plaza, a self-proclaimed “power bottom,” says that when it comes to red hot gay lovin’, bottoms hold most of the cards. “Most of the time, bottoms don’t need to seek out sex,” he writes. “Guys are drawn to us like a moth to a flame. … Go to the dance club and see for yourself, or better yet ...

Hillary Clinton wants Supreme Court to rule in favor of gay marriage

Until now Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has said she supports the expansion of gay marriage rights on a state-by-state basis, however this week she took her stance a step further.  With a Supreme Court case coming up that could decide gay marriage on the national level, Hillary says she wants the highest court in the land to rule in favor of marriage equality. “Hillary Clinton supports marriage equality and hopes the Supreme Court will come down on the side of same-sex couples being guaranteed that constitutional right,” Clinton spokesperson Adrienne Elrod told BuzzFeed News. This is a far cry from her Republican contenders, most of which are against gay marriage all together. The post Hillary Clinton wants Supreme Court to rule in...
