South Dakota to Consider Anti-Trans Locker Room Bill

The latest state-level attempt to micromanage gender identity among trans youths comes in South Dakota, where two Republican lawmakers have introduced a bill that specifically designates locker room use by students in accordance with their sex at birth. A similar bill was actually vetoed by Republican Governor Dennis Daugaard last year, who appropriately said of that bill that it “does not address any pressing issue concerning the school districts of South Dakota” and would instead needlessly “impose statewide standards” and “remove the ability of local school districts” to determine what is best for their students. Of the new attempt by Republican State Senator Lance Russell, resident advocates responded warily on behalf of the students who would be singled out: Libby Skarin, policy director...

Another One Of Trump’s Cabinet Candidates Has Made Horrific Comments About LGBTQs

Just how bad is David Clarke, currently being considered for Donald Trump’s cabinet? Oh, boy, he’s really, really bad. Like, even bad by the standards of The Donald administration, and that’s saying something considering the monsters he’s handing power over to. Here are a few of Clarke’s greatest hits: After a gunman attacked the Pulse nightclub in the worst American mass shooting, Clarke said that gun control was a “distraction” from more important issues like Hillary Clinton‘s emails. Yup, the mass murder of dozens of queer people: a “distraction.” He also called trans people “freakish,” so thanks for that, and said “they’re shoving it down our throats.” He probably means that metaphorically, which...

The Last Marriage Equality Watch – April 30th

“…I may yet live to see gay marriage become a reality in the United States in my lifetime. And wouldn’t that be something.” Those were the words I wrote when we first started Marriage Equality Watch back in January 2008: before Prop 8, before President Obama was elected, before Mark and I were married, when it was still GLBT instead of LGBT… and far before marriage equality became a reality in all 50 states. Now that we have come full circle to the end of this amazing project, I thought it would be appropriate to share that column with you once again: https://purpleunions.com/blog/2016/04/why-the-word-marriage-matters-3.html How far we have come in eight short years! In the end, it wasn&#...

NC Lt. Gov. Dan Forest: Obama Administration Using Extortion to Push ‘Radical Leftist Agenda’ – WATCH

North Carolina Lieutenant Governor Dan Forest accused the Obama administration of using the legal battle over HB 2 as a political football to push its “radical leftist agenda.” Speaking with The Daily Signal, Forest called the DOJ’s countersuit against North Carolina, a suit that could result in the loss of $2 billion in federal funds for the state, “extortion.” Forest also says the federal government is holding the children of North Carolina hostage. As for U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch’s comparing HB 2 to Jim Crow laws and other forms of state-sponsored discrimination, Forest says, “To use Jim Crow laws is pretty shameful…the color of somebody’s skin, the pigment of their skin has absolutely nothing to do, zero...

Houston Bigot Who Bankrolled HERO Repeal Effort Labeled Anti-LGBT Hate Group

The longtime anti-gay Houston activist who quietly bankrolled the campaign to repeal the city’s Equal Rights Ordinance has been labeled an anti-LGBT hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. SPLC on Wednesday inducted Dr. Steve Hotze and his Conservative Republicans of Texas into the civil rights group’s renowned hall of homophobic shame. Hotze has been fighting LGBT equality in Houston since the 1980s, and he contributed hundreds of thousands to the successful effort to repeal HERO. The Texas Observer reports: “What we look at in the anti-LGBT groups is primarily the use of lies, of falsehoods, that have the effect of demonizing gay people,” SPLC senior fellow Mark Potok told The Texas Observer. “So, it’s not merely that they opposed...

Texas Gay-Rights Fight Pits Glenn Beck Against ‘Trans Queers For Satan’

Last week we told you how a heroic lesbian student convinced her school district near Fort Worth to take up LGBT protections after administrators put the kibosh on her adorable “promposal” to another girl. The Keller school board is scheduled to vote tonight on a proposal, initiated by Timber Creek High School student Casey Akers, that would add sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression to the district’s nondiscrimination and anti-bullying policies covering students, faculty and staff. As we’ve mentioned, the proposal has met with fierce opposition in the conservative suburb. And now, anti-gay Fox News host Glenn Beck, who happens to live in Keller, has joined the fight: Also opposing LGBT protections is the radical Northeast Tarrant Tea Party, led by...

The right-wing myth that prohibiting discrimination against transgender students causes confusion and inappropriate behavior has been shattered by evidence from 17 school districts, reports MediaMatters. For example, Lisa Pinto, spokesperson for Jefferson County Schools in Colorado, said: “Our District seeks to foster an educational environment that is safe and free from all discrimination for all students.  We are very aware of, and participating in, the discussion regarding transgender students using the bathroom of their choice.  Additionally, we are currently updating our annual training materials to discuss this matter.  We will...

Trans Teen’s Lawsuit Prompts South Carolina DMV to Change Driver’s License Photo Policy

A transgender teen who filed a federal lawsuit last September against South Carolina’s Department of Motor Vehicles for sex discrimination and violating free speech won her case reports NPR.org. Chase Culpepper, 17, filed the suit after DMV officials told her to remove her mascara and eye shadow before taking her driver’s license photo, arguing with her that her cosmetics was a "disguise." The department claimed that a 2009 rule prohibits applicants from "purposely altering his or her appearance so that the photo would misrepresent his or her identity." Culpepper filed a lawsuit in response to the Spring 2014 incident calling the policy "unconstitutionally vague and overbroad" and arguing it allowed DMV officials to make "arbitrary and capricious" decisions based on the department’s personal biases regarding gender presentation...
